The resort for skiing and the village for all the rest
It is difficult to be more of a village ski resort than at Les Estables ! It would perhaps be more appropriate to speak of the village ski resort, because the village was already here before the ski resort. No concrete, only local stone, wood and lauzes …
Perched at an altitude of 1350 metres, the ski resort of Les Estables, is the highest village in Auvergne and the mont Mézenc, the highest point of the Haute-Loire. Developing a skiing activity here was a logical consequence of its altitude but this did not mean ignoring our typical architecture.
The ski resort of Les Estables offers an choice of activities which should satisfy all winter sports enthusiasts, whatever their age and ability. You will find:
- 9 ski alpin ski tracks and 5 ski lifts
- A young, dynamic French Ski School
- A Nordic area of over 50 km
- A biathlon stadium
- A school and 3 spots of snow kiting
- Way-marked tracks for snowshoe walking
- 5 mushers offering dog sledding and trekking.
But at the foot of the resort there is also this charming village set in the heart of magnificent landscapes to which the “burle” (local snow storm) sometimes adds a typical magic touch. Countryside and a village where local traditions are strong and where visitors can discover a graceful mixture of culture, landscapes, sport and gastronomy.
You will probably also appreciate the typical architecture of the houses where stone and wood are present from the ground to the ceiling !
Do not miss either, the Fine Fat beef of Mézenc (Fin Gras du Mézenc) (lien renvoyant vers l’article Fin Gras), seasonal meat of exceptional quality available from February to June. A themed museum is devoted to Fin Gras at Chaudeyrolles. These different places of visit (lien renvoyant vers l’article site de visites) remind you that our mountains are not only be limited to skiing ! They reveal a vital animated mountain area steeped in folk culture…
The ski resort of Les Estables is the ideal holiday place for inexperienced or non-exclusive skiers in families or with friends.
No need for an immense Alpine ski area to enjoy a pleasant and happy skiing holiday. On the other hand, the environment, atmosphere and architecture are certainly vital.
